8 REASONS WHY GOLFING IN SWANSEA IS UNBEATABLE

Machy
Planning your next golf break?

If you’re looking some quality rounds of golf (and some excellent after-hours activities), we don’t think there’s anywhere better than South West Wales.

Here’s why it’s best to birdie in Swansea:

#1 – THE VARIETY

Langland Bay

Langland Bay

The area around Swansea is home to a number of testing, memorable golf courses. What’s more, its sheer variety makes it the perfect option for a golf break.

When you find yourself golfing in Swansea, you’ll be struck by the diversity of its courses:

  • The remote, blustery links-style golf found at Southerndown and Pennard
  • The diminutive, complex course at Langland Bay
  • The lengthy, driver-centric challenge at Fairward Park
  • The testing, water hazard-heavy Machynys Peninsula
  • The split personality of Pyle & Kenfig’s back and front 9
  • The windy, ultra-scenic Royal Porthcawl – renowned as Wales’ best course

If you’re looking to test yourself across a range disciplines and make full use of every club (and test your mental faculties too), you won’t do better than around Swansea.

#2 – THE PROXIMITY

Not only can golfers enjoy a wide variety of courses along the South-west Welsh coast, but they can also enjoy a healthy concentration of quality golfing spots.

SoutherndownRoyal Porthcawl and Pyle & Kenfig courses to the east of Swansea are just a half-hour drive along the M4 to the region’s most westerly quality course at Ashburnham and Machynys Peninsula.

And in between there are several top-class courses to pit your wits against.

#3 – THE SCENERY

Pennard 16th

Pennard Golf Club

Home to the Gower, the first place in the UK to be designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, South West Wales is well famed for its super-scenic landscapes and frankly ridiculous views.

Langlanddddd

The locale’s golf courses are sculpted among the local scenery; designed to perfectly complement the natural backdrops and enhance the jaw-dropping aesthetics of the local surroundings.

Machynys 16th

Machynys Peninsula

Golf is a sport that allows participants to enjoy the very best of the British countryside. It doesn’t get much better than South West Wales.

#4 – THE QUALITY

When you come to Swansea, you’re guaranteed some great rounds of golf. The likes of SoutherndownAshburnhamRoyal Porthcawl, and Pennard are renowned as some of the best in the UK.

Many of these courses have been around for decades. Greens and fairways are immaculately kept all year round and views (as we’ve mentioned) must be seen to be believed. There’s no pretension to be found here, as can often be found in some noteworthy courses across the border – just top quality courses for you to test yourself against.

#5 – THE WEATHER

The great thing about South Wales is that it never rains. You’ll enjoy wall-to-wall sunshine, every day.

…alright, not really. There’s a chance you ‘might’ get hit by the odd rain shower – this is Great Britain after all. But due to their geography, clever drainage designs and good old-fashioned necessity, Swansea’s local courses are renowned for their hardiness under torrid conditions.

For instance, remember the 2010 Ryder Cup when the Celtic Manor had to close because of rain? Southerndownstayed open.

However, there’s plenty to do if bad weather does stop play.

#6 – THE ACCESSIBILITY

LDN TO SWN

Britain is home to a number of golf-rich areas: Yorkshire, Merseyside and, of course, the Highlands of Scotland. They all have a rich variety of formidable, famous courses. But they are, it’s fair to say, hard to get to – especially from southern England.

Swansea is just a three-hour drive from the western side of the M25. Easy peasy.

#7- THE AFFORDABILITY

Machynys from the sky

Machynys Peninsula

While the holidaying golfer looks for quality above all, it’s fair to say that value for money is pretty important too. Swansea’s got plenty of that.

For instance, rates at one of Britain’s favourite courses Royal Porthcawl are available from £125 in summer 2015 – and that’s before group discounts are taken into effect. At Pennard, 75th in the UK according to Top 100 Golf Courses, costs just £50. Bargain.

When it’s time to step off the fairway, Swansea is extremely affordable too. Your hard-earned dollar goes plenty further than it does in the South East. Which leads us to…

#8 – THE AFTER HOURS

Of course, no golf break is ever totally about the great game. You need some after-hours entertainment too. Swansea comes into its own in this respect.

You’ll find a wide array of steak joints, wine bars and late-night boozers in Swansea (many on the town’s famous Wind Street) to whet your whistle after your round of golf.
