Tanisha wins Team Member of the Month for August

Forget about the Oscars, Ballon D’Or or the BAFTAs, the winner of this month’s most sought after prize, The Dragon Hotel’s Team member of the Month, goes to Tanisha Williams of the Conference and Banqueting Team. The award goes to Tanisha in recognition of the work she put in recently, not only in our department, but also the shifts she has happily covered in the Housekeeping Department.

We have had a busy month in the Conference Department, where we had the pleasure of hosting the English and Finnish National Under 19’s Ladies Football Teams. Both team were in Wales competing in the UEFA organised tournament, and the conference team were tasked with ensuring all of their dietary requirements were met. So as you can imagine, with 35 hungry members in each squad, with breakfast, lunch and dinner to serve, we were kept on our feet, but with Tanisha’s help, all went well.

As the tournament progressed, both teams did well in their individual groups, gaining the results needed to progress though to the semi final, where by a quirk of the gods, the two teams were drawn to play one another. Having got to know both of the squads quite well during their time in the hotel, the C&B team decided it would be a good idea to go to the semi final and cheer both teams on. We must have looked quiet strange in the crowd cheering for both teams! England won the game, but Finland gained many admirers for their unending determination.

So once again, a massive thank you to Tanisha, from both the C&B, and Housekeeping departments, for ensuring that all went well during the tournament. The only down side to the story is that England were beaten in the final by France!

Mr and Mrs Events win Team Member of the Month for July!

It was a hard decision to make for this month so it was decided that Gethyn and Ellie from the Events team would be joint winners! photo (2)

Gethyn has been with the hotel for nearly 8 years and he is always willing to help out other departments when needed. In fact, he is affectionately known as Mr IT within the hotel!

Sadly we say goodbye to Ellie this month as she was only here for a 6 month placement but she has fitted in very well within the Events team. Although don’t bother asking her to make tea as it is not one of her strongest points (we think this may have been deliberate so that she didn’t have to make it so often!). Ellie has plans to see the world with her first point of call to test out the après ski so we wish her all the best.

Sadly we have still got to put up with Gethyn but at least he does make a great cup of coffee so I guess he can stay for now!

All around the world Staff Party

Staff PartyWe had our biannual staff party on Sunday, the theme was all around the world and boy did the staff put the effort into their costumes!

The room was perfectly decorated with themes and national flags from all around the world.  We had a double bungee run, so the competition was fierce we had chefs to the hotel fitness guru taking part and somebody nearly broke it (not mentioning any names!).

The staff danced the night away with our resident DJ; we played some party games and had a limbo dance off!

All in all everyone had a fab evening and there were plenty of sore heads on Monday morning!

Red Fiat 500

It started early on Thursday 23rd May with an 8.55am Flybe flight from Cardiff to Edinburgh and after a bumpy ride we finally landed at 10.30am, ready to start our road trip.

The bright red Fiat 500 was there waiting for us and when we eventually found our way out of the car park, we headed off to Macdonald Hotels & Resorts Head Office. We were welcomed by Joan Adams and given the grand tour meeting staff along the way, starting with account and working our way up the ladder to the call centre. All staff were busy on calls taking bookings for the group and it was a great opportunity to put faces to names.

The road trip continued on to Macdonald Houstoun House Hotel where we enjoyed lunch in the bar of this fabulous venue, set in lovely grounds – a perfect venue for weddings. It’s a shame we couldn’t stay any longer but the Macdonald Inchyra Hotel & Spa was calling and our beauty treatments were waiting.

We quickly checked in, changed into our robes and made our way to the health club and spa. Sarah and Cheryl enjoyed a Decleor Aroma Back Relief massage while Louise enjoyed a Decleor Vital Eyes facial. We felt so relaxed afterwards that we needed to sample the scones, jam and cream whilst watching everyone work out in the gym!


Steak at The Scottish Steak Club

After slipping out of our robes, the evening was spent in the Scottish Steak Club where we all enjoyed the famous Scottish heritage.

The next morning saw the Fiat 500 race up the motorway to the Macdonald Holyrood Hotel in Edinburgh city centre. Susan Minto was very welcoming and showed us around including a peek at the newly refurbished bedrooms. The day was finished with a wee bit of retail therapy and a makeover in Harvey Nichols before taking the flight back to sunny Wales!

Introducing the NEW Dragon Mini!

Can you believe that I actually agreed to a number plate with the number 13????

The Dragon Hotel Mini was delivered to the hotel on the 1st March so I was very excited to drive home that evening with only 5 miles on the mileage counter.

I am keeping my fingers crossed that this new mini does not attract the speeding cameras and police cars on the M4 like the old one did!!!photo (2) (2)

Last week the Mini and I were busy playing the Easter bunny when we delivered Dragon Easter Eggs to companies in and around Swansea.  I thought it was nice to break the engine in slowly before the long journeys up to Derby and Manchester this month to drum business up for the hotel.

So if you see me at the traffic lights in the morning doing my lipstick give me a beep.

Question:- How many people can you fit in a Mini?

Answer:- If it’s a new BMW Mini and those people happen to be very flexible then the answer is 28 (5 if they’re all like me), as confirmed for a new Guiness World Record at Potters Field Park, London in 2012.

It’s once again that time where we proudly announce the member of staff who has stood out amongst all.  Our team member of the month goes to our ‘Kitchen Porter’ Christopher Brown!

Chris has worked for the Hotel since July 2009, since his time at the hotel he has clearly demonstrated that his commitment and determination to his job shines through! From washing dishes to helping to prepare for some of our large events, Chris has been a big support to Steve and his team of chefs!

Chris has now decided to move departments within the hotel and will be joining our night’s team later this month. I am sure that he will continue to show great enthusiasm within his new role and be an asset to Kelly and her team!

Please join me in saying ‘Congratulations’ Chris on your well deserved award and good luck in your new position!

We are pleased to announce that The Dragon Hotel has become an Associate Hotel with Macdonald Hotels & Resorts.

This marks a really exciting chapter for the hotel. Macdonald Hotels & Resorts has over 45 hotels across the UK and 6 resorts in Spain and Portugal.  One of the UK’s largest privately-owned hotel groups, with its roots in Scotland, we’re looking forward to being part of a family that also includes famous hotels such as the five-star Macdonald Bath Spa Hotel and Macdonald Compleat Angler on the banks of the River Thames. 

The hotel will continue to be owned by asset management and property development firm London Devonshire Trust and The Dragon Hotel brand will not be changing. This is yet another new chapter in the hotel’s colourful history – we thank you for your continued support during this exciting time.

Week of Work!

Well she couldn’t have picked a busier week to come and join The Dragon Hotel, but our Work Experience girl Katherine made the most of her Week of Work.  Organized by Swansea University where she is a Language student, the scheme was set up to help those who didn’t have much experience get an insight into the running of a hotel.

During her days with us, she has got stuck into the cleaning of the rooms (literally getting tangled in the bed sheets . . . but got the hang of it in the end). Attended the meetings after which she had taken in so much information an urgent lunch break was needed, and helpfully created 2 months worth of Hootsuite databases which the staff seemed extremely grateful for!

Most importantly though, she got to talk to most of the people who work at the hotel, who sat down with her and explained their personal roles in detail.  This was a great help to her and she is extremely grateful to those who took time out of their jobs to talk to her about their responsibilities at The Dragon Hotel.

Of course the snow arrived, which meant Katherine had the experience of seeing the trouble this bought to working life.  However, even though the weather outstayed its welcome she never got the impression that she was doing the same.

Everyone has been so welcoming and friendly! And despite the fact that according to her badge, her name was ‘Work Experience’, they all remembered her name and always took the chance to ask how her experience was going and if she was enjoying her time here.

On the whole, her time with The Dragon Hotel has proved to be a great experience and she has enjoyed every second! She would like to thank all of those who have looked after her in the different departments (there are too many to name!) and a special thanks to the General Manager Catherine Garcia for giving her this opportunity!

She will look forward to seeing you again when she visits the hotel – which after seeing the rooms, will be very soon!!

Team Member of the Month – Tanisha Williams

Once again, it’s time for us to honour a Team Member whose actions and efforts have impressed and inspired us.  There was no hesitation or debate within the team that the very special and deserving person to take the title Team Member of the Month for August was the lovely Tanisha Williams – Conference & Banqueting Supervisor.  Tanisha has been the recipient of this award on a number of occasions now which goes to show how valued she is.

Tanisha has been with us at the Dragon Hotel for 8 years and has worked her way up through the ranks to her most recent promotion to full time Conference & Banqueting Supervisor.  Her dedication to the role and to providing first class customer service is inspirational.

Tanisha is also the Queen of Christmas tree decorating which was beautifully demonstrated at our recent ‘Christmas in September’ event.
