The A Team is back….

The reservations department is now back to full steam!!

I (Louise – reservations manager) have been off for 7 weeks after having surgery on my shoulder. I was counting down the days to return however as there is only so much Jeremy Kyle and Loose Women you can watch!

Things have changed since I have been away with becoming an Associate Hotel with Macdonald Hotels & Resorts.  One of the changes is that we have a new breakfast menu to look forward to (Sean and I will be sampling this asap but don’t tell Chef!)  Sean is glad to have me back (I think!) and he managed well without me despite being thrown in at the deep end .

However, it feels like I have never been away - so much so that I have had to have my grey hairs covered already and it has only been 3 weeks!!

The Dragon Hotel’s Team Member of the Month: February

It’s once again that time where we proudly announce the member of staff who has stood out amongst all.  Our team member of the month for February goes to Jaidon Williams from Housekeeping who stands out amongst us all in more ways than one!

This is a photo of the many talented Williams family.

This is a photo of the many talented Williams family.

He was awarded employee of the month for 3 main reasons:

Reason 1: Organising the best Christmas party for our staff along with the help of sister Tanisha
Reason 2: Making our Valentine’s Package extra special by making the swans for our bedrooms
Reason 3: St David’s day event was a huge success and to make it even more special Jaidon was our photographer for the day.
Is there no end to his talents?

Karly Williams’ week away at Macdonald Berystede Hotel & Spa, Ascot

Karly

An opportunity to manage the housekeeping department in Ascot came my way, what a fantastic chance to further my career.

This was my first time working away from home which was an amazing experience, the hotel was more rural than what I’m used to, being in the city centre at The Dragon Hotel.

I looked after the housekeeping team for a week to make sure standards of cleanliness were high in the 126 bedroom hotel. I would like to thank all the staff at Macdonald Berystede Hotel & Spa, for welcoming me as  part of their team and look forward to working with them again should the opportunity arise.

(Also, on a lighter note I would welcome the opportunity of working at any of our sister hotels in Portugal or Spain too!)

Valentine Success

Love was in the air at The Dragon Hotel on Valentine’s day

Our bedrooms were presented with swans and rose petals

Valentine’s menu was a big success with our guests

Everyone including staff really enjoyed the occasion

Many thanks to Jaidon Williams for his hard work making the bedrooms look fantastic!

Week of Work!

Well she couldn’t have picked a busier week to come and join The Dragon Hotel, but our Work Experience girl Katherine made the most of her Week of Work.  Organized by Swansea University where she is a Language student, the scheme was set up to help those who didn’t have much experience get an insight into the running of a hotel.

During her days with us, she has got stuck into the cleaning of the rooms (literally getting tangled in the bed sheets . . . but got the hang of it in the end). Attended the meetings after which she had taken in so much information an urgent lunch break was needed, and helpfully created 2 months worth of Hootsuite databases which the staff seemed extremely grateful for!

Most importantly though, she got to talk to most of the people who work at the hotel, who sat down with her and explained their personal roles in detail.  This was a great help to her and she is extremely grateful to those who took time out of their jobs to talk to her about their responsibilities at The Dragon Hotel.

Of course the snow arrived, which meant Katherine had the experience of seeing the trouble this bought to working life.  However, even though the weather outstayed its welcome she never got the impression that she was doing the same.

Everyone has been so welcoming and friendly! And despite the fact that according to her badge, her name was ‘Work Experience’, they all remembered her name and always took the chance to ask how her experience was going and if she was enjoying her time here.

On the whole, her time with The Dragon Hotel has proved to be a great experience and she has enjoyed every second! She would like to thank all of those who have looked after her in the different departments (there are too many to name!) and a special thanks to the General Manager Catherine Garcia for giving her this opportunity!

She will look forward to seeing you again when she visits the hotel – which after seeing the rooms, will be very soon!!

Highly Commended Best Large Hotel

It is with much pride and great delight that I confirm that The Dragon Hotel came Highly Commended in the Best Large Hotel category at the Swansea Bay Tourism Awards last night.  Congratulations to all category winners and runners up – I’m sure that there are some headaches around the city this morning!

We enjoyed a lovely evening at The Brangwyn Hall with The Wave’s Badger hosting the awards after a word of welcome from Lisa Cameron of the South Wales Evening Post.  Entertainment was provided by local band The Insiderz.

Tourism Awards As this biennial awards ceremony goes, this year was quite subdued for us from The Dragon – no one had food poisoning…no one danced on the tables…no one ended up leaving in an ambulance…we were hardly there at all!

Bank Holiday Weekend

Welsh Mneu Live

We were very proud to be the hospitality partner for the ‘Welsh Menu Live Food Festival’ that took place over the Bank Holiday weekend.

On Friday night we hosted the ‘Festival Launch Dinner’, which was a sumptuous 8 course tasting menu featuring some of the Food Festival 019finest local produce that Swansea could offer.

Hosted by Jamie Owen, he spoke about the different courses and the suppliers that helped us to produce the fantastic dishes. Some of the generous supplies included: Gower Salt Marsh Lamb, Swansea Fish, Abrahams, Goodies & The Choice is Yours from Swansea Market, as well as support from Sainsbury’s.

From Saturday through to the Bank Holiday Monday, we hosted ‘The Welsh Menu Live – Food Theatre’ in association with Swansea Market.

Throughout the weekend, Welsh chefs, food and drink connoisseurs demonstrated their skills to the  willing audience. Some of the experts included: Sophie Food Festival Grigson, Fiona Faulkner, Anthony Evans, Jo Wheatley, Luke Thomas, Bryn Williams, Susy Atkins & Gareth Johns.

For those of you who were lucky enough to soak up the ‘foodie’ atmosphere over that weekend, we hope you enjoyed the experience!

Team Member of the Month – Cynthia Pearce

It’s once again that time where we proudly announce the member of staff who has stood out amongst the rest as going the extra mile for Queen and Country (well for The Dragon Hotel at least).  Cleaning up the award this time around is Housekeeping Evening Maid Cynthia (rapturous applause and much cheering!)

Cynthia - Team Member of The Month

Cynthia has worked at the Hotel for going on 18 months and although she doesn’t always relish a dirty car park she has clearly demonstrated that her commitment and determination to her job shines through!
