This month’s winner is the Accounts Manager Extraordinaire Helen John.  Helen has been the accounts manager here at The Dragon Hotel since 2006.

She has worked really hard over the last few months without complaint and has led the team exceptionally well during the transition period of becoming an Associate Hotel with Macdonald Hotels & Resorts.

All her hard work has paid off and she will be rewarding herself with a 2 week holiday in July on the fabulous Greek island of Santorini.

 This week I have shadowed individuals from many departments and been delegated projects of an afternoon. I quickly realised the complex make-up of the Hotel and how essential it is for communication between departments to be fluid. A concept the hotel seems to have down to a T.  This was obvious after I was invited to participate in the weekly heads of department meeting (HOD – one of the many thousands of acronyms to get your head around here!), where I presented my first project of the week: uniforms. I was involved in creating an order form for sizing and items to be ordered from every department. Another of my mini projects involved creating conference evaluation forms, where I was able to use my creativity and IT experience to develop something of use for the hotel.

 Although I am sure I have only had time to see a snippet of the runnings of this establishment I feel I have gained a vast insight into the daily roles of many members of staff at the hotel. I have learnt an interesting range of new skills from this family orientated business including how to correctly lay a table for breakfast, and even how to test for chlorine and PH balance in a pool! Practical business management skills have also been a major part of my week taught by one of the loveliest and most staff orientated managers, Cath Garcia, whom I have been fortunate enough to shadow.

 Being a student, you often forget what a hard day’s work feels like, but I must say that I have thoroughly enjoyed coming to the hotel this week, where I felt engaged and useful. (except for on reception with their complex booking system! – too much for a mere politics student) I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those individuals in all the different departments (that I could squeeze into my week!) for making me feel so welcome and part of the team from the offset. Having been asked by everyone if I am enjoying myself every day, with many members of staff being interested in my studies at university and occupied with helping me understand the running of their personal roles within the business, I will be sad to say goodbye to my new colleagues at The Dragon Hotel, although I will never be too far away for a visit (when student finances allow it – THEY DO A MEAN BREAKFAST!).

Take advantage of this occasion to finish work early and enjoy a sumptuous lunch soaked in the joyous atmosphere of the day.

Red Fiat 500

It started early on Thursday 23^rd May with an 8.55am Flybe flight from Cardiff to Edinburgh and after a bumpy ride we finally landed at 10.30am, ready to start our road trip.

The bright red Fiat 500 was there waiting for us and when we eventually found our way out of the car park, we headed off to Macdonald Hotels & Resorts Head Office. We were welcomed by Joan Adams and given the grand tour meeting staff along the way, starting with account and working our way up the ladder to the call centre. All staff were busy on calls taking bookings for the group and it was a great opportunity to put faces to names.

The road trip continued on to Macdonald Houstoun House Hotel where we enjoyed lunch in the bar of this fabulous venue, set in lovely grounds – a perfect venue for weddings. It’s a shame we couldn’t stay any longer but the Macdonald Inchyra Hotel & Spa was calling and our beauty treatments were waiting.

We quickly checked in, changed into our robes and made our way to the health club and spa. Sarah and Cheryl enjoyed a Decleor Aroma Back Relief massage while Louise enjoyed a Decleor Vital Eyes facial. We felt so relaxed afterwards that we needed to sample the scones, jam and cream whilst watching everyone work out in the gym!

After slipping out of our robes, the evening was spent in the Scottish Steak Club where we all enjoyed the famous Scottish heritage.

The next morning saw the Fiat 500 race up the motorway to the Macdonald Holyrood Hotel in Edinburgh city centre. Susan Minto was very welcoming and showed us around including a peek at the newly refurbished bedrooms. The day was finished with a wee bit of retail therapy and a makeover in Harvey Nichols before taking the flight back to sunny Wales!

The meetings also became recruitment drives to the Dragon’s Sales Army. Officially launching the new SAS campaign, General Garcia directly recruited over 50 new troopers to the cause (which left her more SOS than SAS).  Many immediately won caps and T-shirts for their contribution to the boot camps and General Garcia is now handing over the baton to SAS Champion, Colonel Whitticase to lead the regiment into battle.

Part of the esteemed Food & Beverage department, Ed has worked at The Dragon since September 2011.  Ed was nominated for April’s Team Member of the Month Award due to the extra work he is willing to put in to ensure the smooth running of service.  Originally from Gowerton, his pastimes include socialising and football and is an avid Manchester United supporter (and Swansea of course). 

In the future he aims to manage Manchester United Football Club and is currently updating his CV – who knows we may be losing him soon!
