Rhossili Bay in The Gower has been named as one of the world’s top 10 beaches – and the best beach in the UK.
The three-mile stretch of sand moved from its position of 10th last year to claim 9th spot in the list of the world’s best beaches by the travel website TripAdvisor. It also cemented its place as one of Europe’s top 3 seaside locations alongside Lampesuda in Italy and Formentera, Spain.
According to the survey, the world’s best beach is Baia do Sancho in Fernando de Norohna, Brazil – an island some 200 miles northeast of the mainland with 250-foot cliffs and exotic vegetation.
Rhossili Bay beat beaches in Australia, South Africa and the Seychelles to its top 10 position, as well as British beaches in Cornwall, Devon and Dorset. The beach on the Gower Peninsula may not be able to boast the reliably-tropical conditions of many of its rivals, but its three-mile beach, rare wildlife and stunning coastal views are a huge hit with both natives and tourists and it regularly features in lists of the world’s best beaches.
A spokesman from TripAdvisor said that Rhossili Bay’s continued popularity showed that you didn’t have to travel halfway around the world to visit a brilliant beach. He said:
“To have a Welsh beach named among not only the best in Europe, but the best in the world, just goes to show how lucky we are in the UK to have such stunning scenery right on our doorstep.”
We couldn’t have put it better ourselves.
