Friday, February 19th, 2010

Ashburnham, is where Welshman and winning Ryder Cup Captain, Dai Rees won the PGA title in 1959 and has long been regarded as one of the best links courses in Britain. Harry Vardon twice played the course and commented, “The course I like best in Wales is Ashburnham”.

Measuring 6,910 yards has crowned two further Ryder Cup Captains in their playing careers: Bernard Gallacher (Schweppes PGA Championship, 1969) and Sam Torrance (Martini Tournament 1976)

Ashburnham has also hosted many of the major amateur tournaments having first held a Welsh Amateur Championship in 1904. In more recent years it has been the venue for both the Men’s and Ladies Home Internationals; British Youths, British Ladies and British Senior Ladies Championships; Welsh Golfing Union Championships and also Welsh PGA events. In 2009 it hosted the Welsh Open Strokeplay Championship and in 2010 it will again play host to the Home Internationals.

Why We Love Swansea

At The Dragon Hotel, we’re situated in the centre of Swansea and are passionate about this special part of South West Wales. If you’re looking for tourist attractions and things to do in Swansea, you’ll be spoilt with all the options on offer.

The birthplace of Dylan Thomas and Catherine Zeta Jones, this is a lively and vibrant maritime city. It’s well known for its energetic nightlife and a wide range of clubs, bars and restaurants. Here, every age and taste will find something they’ll love.

Shopping and Culture

The Wind Street area has become the modern café quarter by day, and by night, is the liveliest street in the city!

Swansea also has the largest indoor market in Wales where you can sample and buy many of the local delicacies – from cockles and laverbread to traditional Welsh cakes, fresh fish and local souvenirs. Other indoor attractions include The LC leisure centre, a variety of theatres and cinemas and the Parc Tawe leisure complex with the ten-pin bowling arena and tropical hot house Plantasia.

The city has an award-winning Marina and Maritime Quarter, which is home to the National Waterfront Museum, a £30 million attraction which pushes the boundaries of technology in an interactive interpretation of Wales’ industry and innovation. This landmark building is a fusion of Welsh slate, glass and steel with a canopied street of cafes and shops overlooking the marina waterfront. What’s more, it’s only a stone’s throw away from Swansea Museum, the oldest in Wales!

Activities and Days Out

Swansea also has top-of-the-range sporting facilities such as the Wales National Pool, the country’s only Olympic-sized swimming pool. This city by the sea also lends itself well to all manner of outdoor activities and water sports and is a fantastic base from which to visit the many and varied golf courses in the South Wales area.

If you’d prefer to watch your sport, visit the fantastic Liberty Stadium, the 20,000-seat home of Swansea City Football Club and Swansea Ospreys Rugby team at The Neath.

Walks in West Wales

Hikers, walkers and fans of the great outdoors love Swansea. The Victorian resort of Mumbles is only a stone’s throw away and offers a fantastic array of attractions, including a pier, traditional boutiques, craft shops and ice-cream parlours.

Mumbles is known as the ‘Gateway to Gower’, Britain’s first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Gower Peninsula extends west of Mumbles in a succession of stunning coastal and rural sceneries. To the East, the ‘Waterfall Country’ at Afan and the Vale of Neath is a haven for walkers and bikers alike.

Wondering what other tourist attractions or things to do there are in Swansea? Check out our blog, where we’ve plenty of great ideas on how to really make the most of the local area.

“We had our wedding reception at The Dragon on 1st December 2012. The effort undertaken by Gethyn from the events team prior to the event (even helping me laying table favours on the morning) and his presentation when I initially gave him our requirements was unsurpassed by any of the other venues we visited. On the day, Justin, the Catering Manager oversaw the event so that 100+ people all had hot food together – something neither I nor any of our guests had experienced elsewhere. Both of these gentlemen deserve high praise indeed, in ensuring our special day went without a hitch. We are very glad we chose The Dragon, with staff as helpful and experienced as these.  Thank You ” (Adrian & Julie Parker 1st December 2012)
