New Kid on The Block!

My name is Kelly Haslam and I’ve recently started here at The Dragon Hotel as the Reception Manager. I have previously worked at The Bluebell Hotel Neath & The Ramada Encore, Swansea Bay known now as The Ibis.

I have worked in the hotel industry for the last 8 years and started off as a weekend breakfast assistant whilst I was studying Travel & Tourism at Swansea College. My intention once I finished college was to go on and work as an air hostess but whilst working in The Ramada my perception changed as loved working in the hotel.

I have been busy over the last few months getting to know the job & my team. This has paid off as I have been busy over the last week completing performance evaluations.

Current news with myself includes me having laser eye surgery in Bristol tomorrow & agreeing to assist my brother learning to drive in his new car – wish me luck!

Thank-you all for your continued support over the past few months & I would like to wish our guests past, present & future a Happy and Healthy New Year.

T’was the night before Monday!

Monday, November 28th, 2011

T’was the night before Monday and all through the house,a creature was stirring, and it wasn’t a mouse.

His treat stick was finished and hung up with care, and he hoped that she’d notice and more would appear,

but mummy was nestled all snug in her bed, while visions of Starbucks did dance in her head.

Cwtched in her duvet, alarm stuck on snooze,

she tried to fend off the old Monday blues.

In a house in Bridgend another was waking, and three little children had just started shaking,

A glare from her eyes and a shake of her head, was enough to fill them with horror and dread,

She shouted instructions and gripes from the kitchen,

Oh come on, get moving your bedrooms need blitzen,

So up to the house tops in fear they flew, to tidy and dress and be ready for school.

From a house set in Swansea, another did stir, still half asleep and eyes all a blur,

She sipped on a cuppa and then pulled a face, to the bus stop she legged it at quite a fast pace,

Her thoughts filled with figures and numbers to crunch and dreading the milkshake for breakfast and lunch,

the pressure was on to process the wages, her PC was poorly and loading took ages,

her brow was all furrowed from the effort she made, but proudly announced that we all would be paid!!

So you readers I give you this gift of insight, into the lives of us workers on site,

As we forge ever onward to finish each task, in the shadow of this mighty building we bask, with figures and paperwork bravely we fight, happy Monday to all and to all a goodnight!!

New Beautician on the Block!!

Tuesday, November 8th, 2011

The late great Audrey Hepburn once wrote….

For attractive lips, speak words of kindness…
For lovely eyes, seek out the good in people.
For a slim figure, share your food with the hungry.
For beautiful hair, let a child run his/her fingers through it once a day.
For poise, walk with the knowledge that you never walk alone…
People, even more than things, have to be restored, renewed, revived, reclaimed, and redeemed; never throw out anyone.

Remember, if you ever need a helping hand, you will find one at the end of each of your arms.
As you grow older, you will discover that you have two hands; one for helping yourself, and the other for helping others.

Now, that’s all well and good and may indeed make you more beautiful on the inside but sometimes we need a little more help with the outside…and that’s something we can happily take care of here at The Dragon Hotel Healthclub and Spa.

Introducing our fabulous new full time Beauty Therapist Sandra Halfpenny, who is ready and waiting with fantastic facials, marvellous manicures or a mind chilling massage.

Sandra hasn’t been with us for very long but I have to say that her eyebrow shape and tint powers are amazing and age defying facial treatments, wonderfully relaxing.  Her favourite colour is black although she is an extremely colourful and bubbly character, and she would most love to snog George Clooney (wouldn’t we all ladies?).

I’m sure you will all join me in welcoming Sandra to our team at The Dragon Hotel.

Health Club Goes For Gold At The Glyn-Neath Triathlon!

Tuesday, October 4th, 2011

Two of our Health Club employees Andrew Morrissey and Rob Crabtree took part in the Glyn-Neath Triathlon on Sunday 25th September. Rob, who has recently completed a very impressive half iron man race and is a seasoned campaigner of triathlons, was aiming for a top 10 finish, while Andrew who’s a cyclist was aiming to survive.

The race started with a 400 meter indoor swim followed by a 22km cycle and a 3km run. Due to different expected times in the swim we were set off at different times.

Andrew was first to go, with swimming being his weakness he was dreading the swim and this showed. Having struggled through the swim he finally finished the 400m and first transition in just over 13mins. Andrew knew that he would pull a lot of time back on the bike and he did coming in just over 41mins and passing everyone who beat him swimming, however it should also be stated that Andrew dropped his glasses and Garmin while cycling and got stuck behind an annoying slow driver so lost a lot of time (this is not a excuse for Rob beating me just stating the facts and it will also never happen again). He then completed his 3km run in over 13 mins with a finishing time if 1 hour 8 mins coming in 42nd out of 128. “I did enjoy doing my first triathlon however I am very disappointed with my swim and bike; I will carry on swimming but will be concentrating on my bike for my return to France in June”.

Due to Robbeing a far superior swimmer, he set off at a later time. He would be competing against athletes who spend 20-30 hours a week training and have completed Ironman competitions all over the world. Rob started strong in the swim setting a very good pace and putting half a length over his nearest rival. Having realised is pace was too quick he started to slow down, finishing the swim in 2nd place and transition in 7.51. Going into the race Rob knew that out of all three discipline cycling was the weaker but he put in his best performance (some would say lucky but very impressive) finishing 41 mins to stay in contention for a top ten finish.

He then set off on his run and finished in 12min 11secs giving him a overall finishing time of 1 hr 1 min, and coming 18th out of 128. “I was happy with my overall performance but felt that knowing Andrew was also racing I had to push myself to the limit and call on my experience . Overall both we happy to finish but both agreed they could have done better”.

Maria the Magnificent!

It’s time again for us to honour and reward the hard work and effort of one of our team here at The Dragon Hotel!  Sweeping away the rest of the competition, it was a member of the housekeeping department that cleaned up the accolade for this month!! A big congratulations goes to Maria Morgan whose elbows are always greased and ready for action as she diligently dusts and selflessly scrubs away all signs of the night before.. With never a moan or word of complaint she tackles toilets and labours over lobbies, she valiantly vacuums and bravely buffs banisters; it’s all in a days work for the marvellous Maria!

Maria hails from Fforestfach, where she lives with her daughter Lia and 2 dogs.  Her favourite colour is black.  Given the choice she would snog and marry David Beckham (wouldn’t we all ladies?) and avoid at all costs Russell Brand – claiming that he looks like he needs a good wash and hair brush!!

I’m sure you will all join me is saying “Well done Maria” for all your hard work and effort! You would certainly give Kim and Aggie a run for their money!!

Welcome Back Mrs Jones!

Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

No it’s not a new member of the conference & events team; but our very own Wedding Coordinator who become Mrs Jones on Friday 8th July 2011.

July saw the climax of what has been 16 months in the planning for Siân, used to organising the ‘Big Day’ for other brides. It was now her turn to be centre of attention with her husband Russell and what a day it was, from Singing Waiters to a Caricaturist and a Magician, not forgetting Lottie their dog!

After their fantastic day spent with so many family and friends, what a better way to start married life than with 2 weeks in the Caribbean island of Aruba!  Relaxing on the beach with sunset dinners to deep sea fishing (Siân enjoyed this the best! Seasick sums it up).

Siân has now got back in to her routine but this time as Mrs Jones, she has enjoyed showing us all the photos and the fantastic video.  Now when dealing with new brides she can assure them that they are in good hands, just look at how her wedding turned out, one word; FANTASTIC !

Once again massive Congratulations to Mr & Mrs Jones!
